Rob is originally from Cobourg and started his career working a nine-to-five job in Human Resources. At the time, home brewing was a hobby, but when he began getting bored with his office job he decided to kick it to the curb and fully commit to what he was more passionate about. After working two years in the brewing industry, he got his certifications from the Institute of Brewing and Distilling through online courses in 2015. Though he was doing well at his other brewing job, he decided to come work at Signal to be closer to family. Now, he is a master brewer and oversees all of the beer making at our brewery – and does a fantastic job at it!
Q&A With the Brewmaster
What originally got you into brewing?
A friend in college was making beer and I kind of just hung out with him a lot and learned from him... It became a hobby.
How long have you been working at Signal?
I came on the fall of 2016. I was actually the first employee Richard hired and it was just a shell of a building when I came on board.
What's the best part of your job?
Being able to go home every day knowing I've produced and accomplished something I can be proud of.
If you weren't a brewer what would you be doing?
I would like to own my own bar.
Walk us through a typical day in your shoes.
The mornings are really crazy. It's kind of coming in, getting everything heated up, getting all your malt ready for the day's brew, throwing the malt into the mash by hand. You get a little break after that. We sit down and have a coffee. That's usually around nine. And then as soon as it's done converting we transfer it over and then it's busy busy busy with the grain out and getting the tanks ready to receive the wort.
What's your favourite Signal beer?
Personally, I like Wave. It showcases the new craft beer movement and what can be produced.
What can we expect from you in the future?
Lots of exciting beers. We're not shy with putting lots of exciting ingredients in the brews.
